Hello,

I was hoping to get some help with a new phone system that we recently installed at the office.

I have an m8x24-DS system at the office and some of the telephone workstations can't dial extensions. It's as if the key tones are not getting through to the phone system on the other end.

For example, I call any random company and an automated greeting answers saying "Press 1 for abc, Press 2 for xyz or press 0 for reception". I press 1, 2 or 0 but nothing happens.

Only some of the lines in the office can actually get through.

Can you please offer any insight as to why this happening and how I can go about fixing it?

I truly appreciate your responses.

Thank You.

Are you saying that when you call another company and the auto attendant answers and you press one oof teh options on the CCR it doen't work, or in this happening on your phone system?

It happens when I call any company that has an auto-attendant. My phone system does not have an auto-attendant set up. I cannot press any key to get through the attendant or even dial an extension number. There is a brief pause/mute, then the auto-attendant on the other end just keeps going ahead with the greeting.

But it only happens when the call is made from a select few lines. Other lines in my office can dial out to the same company and get through the auto-attendant without any problems.

Thank You.

Can you identify the lines that this is happening on , if its on the same lines always than its possible the polarity reversed , another is that the 8x24 just migt hav eseen ist better days if you have spare trunks you may want top move the non working lines to an empty line.

Just so I am clear at our starting point, is your configuration set for tone (if it defaulted due to a power failure, for example, it would initialize as pulse). Once you are sure it is set for tone dialing, have you tried feature 808 for long tones when you are in another firm's auto-attendant using one of your phone lines that has been giving you trouble, to see if it will work then ? When you say only some of the lines get through, does that mean that any of your extensions using line 001 can get through and any extension using line 002 cannot work the auto-attendant or is the issue that some of your extensions get through with proper tones on line 001, but other of your extensions, using line 001, cannot get through. (I used 001 and 002 just for clarity, it could be any two different trunks in your system). Also, that level of software is installed.

My configuration should be set for tone because most of the phones work fine. I'm not the one who set up the system so I'm not sure about the programming.

Can tone or pulse be configured on each individual line, or is it global for the entire system?

I just tried using Feature 808 on the line that was experiencing the problem, and the long tones worked. I was able to get through the auto-attendants.

It also seems that line may be set to pulse because when a number is dialed, it takes a while before the line rings.

I googled for an hour looking for a programming manual for this system but came up empty handed.

Is programming the problematic lines to tone simple or do I really need the manual?

Thanks again guys, you've been a big help.

Um, I hate to burst your bubble, but your "new" phone system was discontinued around '95 or '96 and whoever recently installed it for you, either didn't program the lines correctly, or you have since had a power failure and that 15 year old battery that holds the programming memory is weak or dead.

The sad part is that you probably paid enough for it that you could have easily purchased a much newer and better Norstar system. Unless they practically gave it to you and warned you about it's age and that you may have trouble with it, I'd call them up and raise hell for selling me such an ancient system and then I'd tell them that if they want to keep my business they can just replace it with either a Compact or Modular ICS Norstar! Those things are practically a dime a dozen now on Craig's List

I can't think of a better or faster way to lose a good customer then to rape them on an obsolete, problematic phone system.

Hello all - new member of the forum in the UK here. I had the same problem as noskills, but I managed to overcome it: Norstar only sends a short tone when a button is pressed, and it is too short for some auto-attendant systems to recognise. When on a call which needs this sort of response, use Feature808 (Long Tones). It then allows the tone to remain as long as the button is pressed - as I say, I have found that it works for me (I have even set f808 on one of my memory buttons so that it is always available!)

I run a small charity and we recently received a donated Nortel M8X24-DS phone system for a new office we were moving into. Apparently, the system is set to pulse. How do you change it to tone? How do you set the long tone feature?

For the Nortel M8X24-DS on a system that was donated to our charity to use, how do I reset the password if I get the "Access Denied" message when trying to use the default password?

If your trying to use the correct default pswd and it's not taking it then it's time to call your local Nortel vendor. This is going to become a problem that is over your head.

Using a 7310 I am able to enter the M8X24 system using the default password. However, when I get to the Configuration->Trunk/Line Data->Show line: prompt, when I try to enter "01", the "0" will display but not the "1" and the word "COPY" is displayed under "Show line:". In reading the instructions for the Norstar 616 mentioned previously, I don't have a NEXT, SHOW or ADD button and can't seem to be able to move forward. From the instructions, I don't think I need to go much farther to be able to set the lines to tone. Could really use some help. Thanks getting me this far!
