There is a file called hl2_e3_2003_d.avi on the pc's C drive which refuses to budge. When I try to delete, I get this message error deleting file or folder cannot delete hl2_e3_2003_d.avi: it is being used by another person or program close any programs that might be using the file and try again.

I have tried the following:

Renaming; Removing the file extension from files and folders; Removing *.avi file type from WMP and DIVX player; closing applications one by one and attempting a delete after each; REGEDIT finding file and deleting; SPYBOT S&D - none of them worked.

Any ideas of how to get rid of this monster file?

Many thanks

COB

Kind regards

Can you see it running in system process` in task manager?(ctrl + alt + delete), Processes....

If so end the process, then delete...

have u tried going into task manager. processes and see if some program is trying to execute it, or try ending certain processes and after each try and delete.

or start in safe mode and see if you can delete it.

See this recent thread for how to delete and handle .avi files under XP: thread779-733239

Boot from a floppy and delete it in DOS (assuming FAT32)

To The Sponge, nice try but no cigar, as stated already tried closing applications.

To Callous3, ditto my friend, tried safe mode also, even as administrator, still no good.

Come back DOS all is forgiven.

To bcastner, always did like your answers, and I do love a "reg hack" occasionally. Had a look at said thread and whoopee! it worked. Have a cigar and my grateful thanks.

To AlanKW, we must have crossed in the ether, I was brought up on DOS, long before all this new stuff. Unfortunately, NTFS, no DOS.

No Cigar! I wasn`t even close...Thanks for the sarcasm.

bcastner, has helped me loads....

PS, are there any people from the UK in these forums?

(Life is like a pubic hair on the toilet seat, everythings fine untill you get pissed off!) every one else has a motto!

TheSponge,

There are quite many UK members. See also the special Forum for UK members.

They are a rowdy and lively bunch.
