My system has been somewhat flaky, so I tried to defragment the hard drive to see if that would help. Using the W98 defrag program, I got to about 3%, then got a message that it needed a scandisk run before continuing.

So I ran scandisk, standard version. It found a lost cluster, but said at the end it had fixed everything. So I ran defrag again, and again got kicked out to run scandisk.

So I ran scandisk again, standard version. It found another lost cluster, and again said it fixed everything. So I ran defrag again, and, yep, got kicked out again to run scandisk.

This time I ran, the full scan version, overnight. Again, said it fixed everything. Ran defrag again, and got kicked out to run scandisk.

At this point, I downloaded the free defragger from Diskeeper, but couldn't install it because it was corrupted.

This led to my problems with Internet access and the like in an earlier post.

What to do?

Try running SpinRite (need to download it from somewhere) to fix your errors and then run defrag in safe mode.

Regards

You could try to run the defrag from safe mode, that might work. Also run a windows system file check and see if any files are corrupted. They can be restored from the install disk.
