Hi,

I've used a particular shortcut key assigned to the shortcut for a program I regularly use since windows 3.1. I've successfully created/added this shortcut key to the shortcut for this program in all versions of windows through Win2K. I've never had a problem.

I just got a new laptop with XP Home on it, and I installed this particular program, no problem. I went to the shortcut icon and right clicked, clicked properties and went to the shortcut key line and tried to hit the shortcut key sequence just as I've done a thousand times before. However, XP Home won't let enter the desired shortcut key. It won't take it. It acts like I've hit an illegal key sequence as my shortcut key.

The shortcut key I want to use and have used for years is "Ctrl-Alt-2". I'm not getting an error message that this shortcut key is already in use, and it doesn't appear to be in use anywhere else.

Question does XP Home no longer allow the use of NUMBERS as part of a shortcut hotkey sequence?? It will let me use a letter, but not the number 2. Like I've said I've never had a problem using "ctrl-alt-2" on any other version of windows.

Thanks,

Gary Britt

Hi,
Maybe it is a HOME version limitation, but in XP Pro it works fine using this method:
To set Ctrl-Alt-2 as the shortcut, on the properties panel for the shortcut, place the cursor in the shortcut key field and press 2 - It will create the Ctrl + Alt + 2 as the shortcut.

Hi Turkbear,

I'm not at that XP machine at the moment so I'll try your suggestion later today. I was trying to hit the full hotkey ctrl-alt-2 when entering the shortcut (which is what I've always done on other versions of windows). I'll try your method of just hitting the 2 and see if that works. I'll let you know if it works. Later this evening.

Thanks,

Gary Britt

Hi,
I suspect that it will ( The 'What's This' tool tip gave me the method)

Hi,
Further testing reveals that the Crtl-Alt-# keys do not work after a reboot or logoff/logon..

Odd..

Dang, that sucks.

A new XP *feature*. I wonder if the registry could be edited to manually insert this kind of hotkey so that it would work?

Thanks,

Gary
