When i do a dcpromo to upgrade to a DC on my 2k member server it asks me to put in a fully qualified domain name (i think its the 2nd step in the wizard). when i type in mydomain.com it gives me a message stating that name is already in use. if i type in mycomputername.mydomain.com it goes in fine but unless im understanding the wizard incorrectly it wants my mydomain.com. On my local LAN i only have a workstation what uses the name myworkstation.mydomain.com. On my DMZ i have a DC with exchange, IIS, and DNS running. Where is the wizard seeing the domain name in use. Im building a new box to bring everything inside my firewall but i cant even build the DC to start with. HELP!?!

thanks in advance...

Hello

Check that there isnt some netbios settings that is using that name. Maybe on your workstation. Hmm, difficult to trouble shoot, as I have never come across that before. I know that in active directory, it is really a no no to rebuild another server with the same name as another server that has existed before. But you dont have ad installed. Ime sure theres a techie answer , and Ime nterested to see if there any any good answers.

:p

But i like to talk, so , erm, yeah.

the names are different for each of the computers. the only thing that they have in common is the mydomain.com suffix. Ill take the workstation offline and see if the server starts to cooperate after I do that...

Ill keep ya posted...

GaryThal is right about one thing, you have a netbios conflict with some other computer. What you can do is add a mydomain0.com or you can find the computer with the mydomain.com and remove it from your LAN.
