My computer won’t boot up Xp completely. It freezes right after I log on. This started happening right after a visit to Limewire (DUH) . It also freezes when I try using Safe Mode. Now here’s the interesting part: When I scan with my anti-virus program, it freezes right at C:\Doc Settings\App Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0\ …….

It seems like the Java files are tweaked ???? Why would Limewire mess with Java ?
Of course I could be wrong and maybe it was just a coincidence with the Limewire thing, but I doubt it ! Even when I slave my drive to a working one the computer will still freeze !!! WTF ? "Last known good configuration" just causes the computer to reboot, over and over. I suspect the registry may be tweaked but don’t know where to start troubleshooting this. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. THANKS !

Can you load the Recovery Console and try running the ChkDsk /r command?

How to install and use the Recovery Console in Windows XP

The hard drive manufacturer will have free diagnostic software that is bootable and able to thoroughly check the condition of your hard drive.

While in the Recovery Console have a look at this option to recover from a corrupted registry.

An easy to follow recovery console description when unable to start computer due to corrupt registry.

This is a layman's version of KB307545 in simple language.

Even more simple with a working machine you can do all the above automatically via a download of the appropriate Guided Help exe.

Download MBAM and do a full scan in SafeMode with Networking... (F8 after POST)...

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

There are malwares out there that implement themselves by just gracing a website, thanks to certain implementations in the browsers and OS, e.g. ActiveX and JavaScript...

now if MBAM does not execute, you will need to download it with the Save As option and rename it to anything at all, e.g. 123TEST.EXE (certain Malware out there monitor certain file names and prevent the execution there off)...

Even when I slave my drive to a working one the computer will still freeze !!!
it may not be a malware issue at all, have a look at your HDD, it may be damaged at certain sectors and that is causing the freeze...

go to the manufacturers (HDD) website and download the appropriate software to check the drive...

How to ask a question, when posting them to a professional forum.
Only ask questions with yes/no answers if you want "yes" or "no"

if even going into safe mode freezes, I guess you should try to repair your windows installation by booting up via a Windows media disc and selecting the repair option.

I had the same problem but it didnt came from Limeware! I did a complete installation of the Windows and then ran several antispyware to clean up the rest of what might have been left. I also know that the same method has not helped anyone so you just have to try and see what happens. The worse case is buy a new hard drive! Good luck
