A user has some saved files in a folder on their desktop. They can open, view and edit their documents however when they try to save changes they get a read-only error and it says that access is denied.

The file attributes are set to Read only. I have had them change these attributes under their sign on as well as the admin sign on and they do not change.

If the user saves the file under a new name they can save without a problem however they don't want to do this for each file because there are so many of them.

They are using Windows XP pro.

Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.
Cheers

There is something serious wrong.

Two thoughts:

. the Read only attribute for folders means essentially nothing under XP (OK, it does flag Explorer to see if a desktop.ini file exists). It is certainly not the same thing as in earlier versions of Windows as a flag. See:
. At the file level, someone, somehow messed with the NTFS permissions. Logon as local administrator, My Computer, right-click the drive, Properties, Security tab:

SYSTEM should have full priviliges
Your problematic user should have full priviliges.

Be more granular. Windows key - E, expand the folders involved for this user, and right-click, properties, Security.

Set appropriate permissions for the user, likely allowing ALL NTFS permissions.
