I've got a 2k3 Standard Ed server and every once in awhile I am unable to browse to any public share on this server, \\servername\c$ or any other method.

If I reboot this server, its fine.

Any ideas?

I checked the event logs and theres nothing.

when i try and remote \\server\c$ i get the following error:

"the specified network name is no longer available."

things are find when i reboot.

I can browse out to any other workstation or sever on the network from "server".

Have you tried mapping this via IP instead of hostname? If you do and experience no further difficulties you most likely have a DNS issue.

well I restarted the server and found the following;

* I was able to browse to the server via DNS(using CNAME and A records). I was not able to hit it by IP. I recieved a "duplicate names exsists on the network error".

I shut the server down and then tried to find the phantom duplicate.There isnt one on my network or at least one that I found.

So I decided on this plan;
**Remove the server from the domin
**Delete the computer file from AD Users and Computers
**Restart the server
**Readd server to domain

My only question is this... This server is a production Web Application server, running IIS. DO you see any detrimental effects of me removing and readding this server to the domain?

thanks

Only if you in some way have users authenticating to the app with domain credentials. It isn't all that common of a way to do things but i have seen it with companies that have their own custom app. My company uses domain credentials for authentication. If you are not sure then consult your app developer.
