Okay, I have three HP Laserjet 4100n's on my network. I have 1 NT4 PDC and 1 NT4 BDC. I have about 12 printer queues. Client machines run 95/98.

I had all printer queues installed on the PDC, but had to migrate some queues to the BDC.

So I have installed all three 4100's on the BDC, two of them work fine, the third does not. It installs on the server without any problems, and seems to set up the sharing without any problems either. I can print from the server okay. However, when you browse from a client machine, you can only see two of the three 4100 printer queues.

If you type in the UNC path for the missing queue, it verifies it and says it's there. I am running 3rd party auditing software which requires me to be able to browse to the printer, in order to be able to allocate it to the appropriate workstations.

I spoke to HP support who have said I have installed the printer in the supported way, but they cannot help.

Any ideas most appreciated.

We have a couple of printers on our network that do the same thing. From what I have been able to tell, if I name the queue with 13 characters or more, Win9x stations will not see it on a browse, but will see it if you put in the full path. Sure hope that helps.

Yep, I've tried that as well, the server name is less than 8 characters, as is the printer share. Have changed the printer share name just in case... still does not appear.

Any more thoughts?

Thanks

That was the only thought I had. The few times I have seen this issue, the queue names were all over 12 characters.

Sorry.

Ok, thanks for your help anyway :-)

Anyone else?

Try again, you are on the right track
I had this problem with HP 4500 printers on an NT4 Server, a printer is installed, tested from server, then shared as .. but Win95/98 workstations could not see it
I resolved the problem by keeping the printer name down to 8 characters, but I had to remove the printers first and start again from scratch, renaming them did not work
Hope this helps

What are you using on the network for name resolution if it is WINS try adding a static route to the problem printer to see if this helps. If nothing else try swapping the queues with one of the other printers. Thanks
