can't add server or get exchange running 1

when i try a dcpromo on my backup server i get an error "can not find domain controller or insufficient authority to access server." i also can't seem to get exchange going which i think is part of the same problem.

my assumption is this... DNS or active directory is not running correctly. the reason i think it is DNS is this. when i try to access the quadinc.org web site from my local LAN i get a can not find error. if i use the ip address it goes strait to the site. if someone out side the building serfs to the Quad site they have no troubles using the name. this indicates to me that my dns is miss-configured; i think.

do you have any ides.

Pete, here's a couple of ideas for starters:
-Make sure SP2 is on the first DC
-Run netdiag (located on 2K CD)on the first DC with the /fix option
-See if you can ping the DC by both name and address
-double-check your IP configurations

thx... i didn't know about netdiag. i ran it the way you suggested and got the error no DNS records have this dc registered.

any ideas. does this mean that i have set up my dns incorectly or am addressing the wrong dns server at my isp

Are you using an internal DNS server at all? If not I think you need to set up a DNS forwarder on the server physically connected to the internet. Here's a good source:
