I can't add any fields to my reports. That includes text boxes. All I get is the outline of the field and the little "ghostbusters" circle and slash.

This is happening on all reports that I open for editing. they are not "read only" files.

Does anyone have any idea what I've done? I've closed and restarted Crystal, but no change.

Crystal 7.5

I rebooted the PC. No change.

I created a new report from scratch, and it has the same problem. Any table fields that were added to the report during the creation wizard process are on the report, but I can't add additional fields or text boxes.

I can add Groups and I can move existing fields, so I know the reports are not completely locked.

How bizarre.....

Instead of choosing the "Insert Text Object" or "Insert Fields" button on the toolbar, I did it through the "Insert" menu.

It worked, and now the toolbar works too.

whatever....

Correction. the problem is back and the Insert menu "trick" doesn't work.

Has anyone ever seen this behavior before? I'm dumbfounded.

OK....I found the problem.
I have dual monitors and normally work off of the "main" monitor (the one where the Windows task bar resides).

I had moved Crystal to my secondary monitor. As long as the "field" outline being added is on the secondary monitor, it has the "ban" symbol next to the field. if I move Crystal back to the main monitor, no problems. If I position Crystal between the two (part of Crystal in each), as soon as I move the new field onto monitor space on the main monitor, I can drop it on the report.

I suspect this may only be an issue in older Crystal, but either way, if anyone ever has this problem with a dual-monitor setup, try this.
