Scenario: 1 desktop, 1 notebook, both running XP Pro sp2. Both in same workgroup. Both can see each other under View workgroup computers. Both can ping each other. Notebook can see about a dozen shared folders on the dewsktop, but can only access one folder. The rest say "access denied". When I try to access the notebook from the desktop, it says "Login failure". I've completely uninstalled antivirus and firewalls on both systems and have activated guest accounts on both. I'm going nuts - any ideas?

Do both have 'use simple file sharing' enabled? If not, that could be your problem

Check your permissions on the folders, to make sure that they are both shared (or that the parent folder of both are shared).

stduc - simple file sharing was not enabled, but I turned it on and it didn't make any difference.

gbaughma - yes the folders are shared. I can see the folders in My Network places, but cannot access them, except for one folder. I can't see any difference in the permissions with the one folder I can access and the others.

OK, this sounds weird, but I actually have had both of these solve the same problem.

1) Try throttling back your network connection to 10-base, instead of 100-base. An incorrect network cable or inductance from flourescent lights, etc. will do *weird* things to your network connectivity.

2) Try plugging the computer that's having the problem into a different power circuit. I actually had this happen at a bank; the president of the bank got a brand new computer. It could ping, but it wouldn't see all of the folders. I plugged into a different power outlet, and everything worked. Weirdest darned thing I had ever seen. Plugged back into the old one, it wouldn't work. We eventually had an electrician bring in a new circuit for his PC.

Finally figured it out. I don't know why, but it seems my backup drive was causing the problem. When I disconnected it, I was able to un-share and re-share the folders, and they connected fine. I had tried that before with the backup drive connected and it didn't work.
