We had an employee leave the company but we didn't delete her account because she has a lot of project information in it. The only change I made was to forward incoming emails to a different person. We get the new emails just fine, but now we need to access the old emails, which are still sitting inside the inbox.

When I try to use Outlook 2003 to open "another user's folder", it tells me "Unable to display the folder. The Inbox folder could not be found." It recognizes the user account, but claims there is no inbox. I never deleted the inbox, never did anything to that account except to forward incoming emails.

So I tried unforwarding the account, basically setting it back to the way it originally was. No difference. Then I tried logging in as that person (her Windows 2000 account was never deleted either) and then opening Outlook on her old computer, but no luck. It keeps telling me that the password is incorrect even though I reset the password and set it to never expire.

What's with the weirdness? Is there another way to get the emails out of that account??

I've been trying different things so I'm not sure which particular thing did the trick. First thing I tried: I noticed the Primary Windows NT Account that was associated with this Exchange account was the person who was getting the forwarded emails. I changed it back to the original account owner.

This didn't seem to work, but I wasn't sure I had to wait for this change to be replicated. So I started poking around the Exchange menus. I went to Tools --> Options and checked the box for displaying the Permissions for all objects. I then viewed the permissions for this account and added Domain Admins as one of the "Windows NT accounts with permissions". After clicking OK I was able to access the Inbox!

Hope this will help someone else if they ever run into the same problem.
