Cannot upgrade from Windows ME to Windows XP

When I run the Windows XP installation CD on my WIndows ME, there's only the option called "New Installation". There ain't the other option called "Upgrading" which I want. What's causing this to happen and how do I solve it?

Is this XP home edition or XP Proffessional edition? XP Pro cannot upgrade a Windows 9x/Me OS. Only XP home can. You will need to either do a New install or upgrade to Windows 2K first. James Collins

For those of you who are confused regarding the upgrade matrix here it is...you most certainly can upgrade a 98/98se/me with pro AND home...there must be a different underlying problem...like ME was a upgrade from maybe 95??
