One of my users has a Dell with a "Windows 95/Internet
Explorer" operating system. I wanted to upgrade it to
Windows 98 so I put in the CD and it started without
any problem then after it had examined the system it
came back and said that I needed to get "Windows 98
Upgrade" disk. This is what I had in the CD Rom tray.

Why can't I do a simple update, I have not had any
problem updating W95 to W98 before.

The Win95 specs are: Microsoft Windows 95
4.00 950a
IE 5.500.2314

Thank you.

Just to verify, there are actually many different Win98 and Win98SE CD's:

1) Win98 full retail
2) Win98 full OEM
3) Win98 upgrade
4) Win98SE full retail
5) Win98SE full OEM
6) Win98SE upgrade for Win95 users
7) Win98SE update for Win98 users

Which one did you say you were using? And are you sure this disk was used to upgrade a Win95A OS, or was it Win95B or Win95C the last time you did it?

This is getting a little confusing. How do I know what
the Win95 is except for what I described above. On the
cover of the Win98 CD it says "Windows 98 Update".

Might be worth uninstalling IE 5.5 - back to version 4 or even 3 if you can. Its been a long time since I've done this, but I seem to remember there is an issue if the version of IE in 95 > version in 98 (98FE ships with 4.01 I think, SE with 5).

If it says "Windows 98 Update" it's an Update CD for Win98 first edition.

It won't upgrade 95 to 98.

Hi, Scotslass,

> On the cover of the Win98 CD it says "Windows 98 Update".

You need the Win98 UPGRADE CD to move up from Win95.

IIRC correctly, the Win98 update CD was mostly about Y2K fixes.

According to my Mike Myers book on A+ Certification, you can have problems upgrading W95 to W98. Here is what you need to do if you have the FULL INSTALL W98 CD:

1. Exit Setup
2. Type "c:"
3. Type "cd\system"
4. Type "ren setupx.dll setupx.ol1"
5. Type "ren setupx.w95 setupx.ol2"
6. Start setup again.

My Euro's worth [my 'canned' response]:

[blue]There is no upgrade CD from Win98 to Win98SE but there is a CD [and storage sleeve] that has printed on it:

"Microsoft Windows98 Second Edition Updates"

Also has on it:

"For users of Windows 98" and "Includes system updates, Internet Explorer 5, Internet Connection Sharing, and more".

It brings Win98 up to Win98SE.

For Win95 users reading this, it does not upgrade Win95 to Win98SE.

It even has its own CD Key for installation.

It also has some support for USB Version 2.0 drivers from hardware manufacturers.

It was available from Microsoft for $20 plus shipping and used to have some.[/blue]

For Accessdabbler shouldn't this: 3. Type "cd\system" be cd\windows\system?

Blujacket:

I'm confused by your post. No one said anything about upgrading from 98 to 98SE. There is a Windows 98 First Edition CD Upgrade that was for upgrading Windows 95 users, and I think that's what ScotsLass is talking about. It would be #3 in my earlier post.

ScotsLass:

I would agree with wolluf that it might be the version of IE causing the problem. I've heard of that before.

I was just pointing out the specific printing on the Win98SE Updates CD and Sleeve so the wrong disk wasn't being used.

Blujacket:

I wrote the instructions verbatim from the book. Presumably, when you drop into DOS and go to "c:" you would already be put into the c:\windows directory. Of course, this could also be an oversight in the book. I've never had the need to try this solution as I presented it in case it helped Scotslass in some way.

Well like the others said: Update is diffrent from Upgrade. I have MS-WINDOWS 98 Upgrade disc. Update means updating windows 98.
But hey I don't know what cd you have on win.

AccessDabbler;
The renaming of the setupx.dll and setup.w95 sounds like it might do the trick. dunno...though I tend to think using an OEM version vs a Full Retail is the issue for some others and there may be a workaround...(not necessarily in Scotslass case, as the "Updates" CD vs "Upgrade" is porbably the issue.

just so you know, you definitely need to change to
CD WINDOWS\SYSTEM
-or- like Blujacket said
cd\windows\system
(caps don't matter)
either will work from a C:\> prompt

Blujacket and Scotslass;
in the hopes of clearing things up a little for ya
see
"versions"
"Update" is not "Upgrade"

TekTippy4U, good links. I still have 2 of the Win98SE Updates CDs in their original jewel case.

Scotslass;
Oh yeh; and the IE 5.5 issue as well....I think 95B/C(OSR2 and 2.5) and early 98 came with 4.0 , but 98 OEM came with 4.01 (basically 4.0 with SP1) and 98SE came with 5.0, I think Cdogg mentioned already.
You may be able to "restore to original" through
Start>Run MSCONFIG
Tools>Internet Explorer Repair Tool
choose "restore"
If it's greyed out, then the Orig IE files have been deleted, either during the IE upgrade or manually

I think cdogg threw that first link out in that longer thread awhile back...and I'm curious as if you've explored the CD's lately that you have.....I believe there's USB updates, Y2K updates, ICS, and other minor Networking, as is mentioned in the MS link I posted (Windows98 System Updates).....it'll show you that "System Update" is but "1" component of 5 which comprise the Customer Service Pack(that's what M$ calls it)

others include

Windows 98 Customer Service Pack includes the following components:
Windows 98 System Update
Windows 98 Year 2000 Update 1
Windows 98 Year 2000 Update 2
Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.01 Service Pack 2 (SP2)
Microsoft Outlook Express Year 2000 Update

Hi, TT4U,

I'm pretty sure the 5 Components you list were for Win98FE - IE4 SP2 was released on 1st April 1999

I dug around in my shelves and draws and can only find a Win98SE Full Retail - which ISTR will upgrade from Win 3.1, Win95 or Win98FE, or install onto a new disk. It's dated 23rd April 1999, 22:22

It's a messy picture…

Hey BigJohnD;

Ya got that right....[smile]

Concerning upgrades from a full CD

Try these for info;

have your popup/popunder blocker ready...one per page atleast...I don't like sending people to links that use them, but some decent info here

more links at bottom of page
