cannot send mail on solaris servers

I am not able to send mails and I need help finding out what the problem is.
I checked the /etc/hosts and did not find mailhost there.
sendmail.cf has
I then tried to telnet to localhosts on pert 25 and it gv the following
telnet localhost 25
Trying 127.0.0.1...
telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection refused

# cat /etc/services | grep mail
smtp 25/tcp mail

Please help me understand what the problem is.
is this a firewall issue

Ur smtp port is not listening for th einbound requests.
Start sendmail with "-bd" option.
