cannot save to folder with huge volume of files

Hi,

we have an application which saves documents to a share on the LAN. Server and clients windows 2000. This folder contains 1.9GB of data. The problem is that the application fails when trying to save a document.

When we create a word doc ourselves and try to save it allows us. However when we open the doc, make changes, and try to save again it say "file of path not found, retry" and on pressing retry it works.

We reckon this is due to the volume of data within the folder/share.
1. Would this be true ?
2. is there anyway of solving the issue given that all documents are tied into being in this location due to the application.

Perhaps security issue. Is the drive Mapped and logged on the client machine?

I've seen this problem before but it was not due to the amount/size of files that were in a directory. I believe it was either a problem with Word or a problem with the way it was dealing with mapped drives.

Is the software saving the files to a mapped drive or to a UNC path?

Make sure that Word is updated to the latest patches.

Which Application are you referring to?

Have you tried removing the Shared access and recreating it?

Are there any clues from the Event Viewer?

Files taking a long time to open may be corrupt, or being checked by virus scanners. Can you run ChkDsk /r on the drive which contains the large folder?
