Cannot reinstall NW 5.1

I originally installed this software (SBS5) about 4 years ago on an IBM server, and since then the server has been outgrown. We purchased a new IBM server and I have been trying to reinstall the software with 1 problem after another. The IBM Server Installation disks do not have an automated setup for Novell (only Windows) so I have to install Novell manally. I have worked through the driver problems (RAID, Pentium 4 chip, gigabit ethernet) but the most persistant is the IDE controller incompatability. When I run INSTALL and select the "Standard" installation (which installs common components) it automatically attempts to load the IDEATA.HAM driver which hangs the machine (the CD-ROM is connected to the ide controller). But if I do an "Advanced" installation, I can deselect the IDEATA.HAM driver and successfully load the RAID driver for the HD's. Only problem is, it does not accept my license diskette (it does accept the license disk during standard install). This one has me clueless. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I always do custom installs so I can control every step of the process.

You should be able to skip the License installation. In fact, there should be a check box that specifically says "Skip License Installation and proceed without license." This will help you get past that. Then you can install the license later after the server is all the way up. No big deal.

Might also be a good idea to use the NW5.1 SPACK 7 overlay CD instead of the original 5.1 CD.

Sounds like a good idea to install SP7. I have been trying to install the original NW 5.1 SP1. I did get it installed once and then installed SP7 over top of it, but it killed the whole installation - don't know why. I do not know how to make an 'overlay'.

You don't have to make an overlay. You just download it from NOvell and burn it to CD. Use it instead of the original CD. You should use it start to finish.. don't even put the original cd in.. it's garbage.
