Cannot reference cell from another workbook

I cannot get Excel to reference a cell from a different workbook. Even if I create a formula in one workbook and cut or copy it to a different workbook it changes the references to the cells in the workbook that the formula was pasted in.
What am I doing wrong??

You will get different results of you CUT vs COPY.

Please explain

1. what you are attempting to achieve (this is what I WANT to do)

2. exactly what you are doing to effect the result (this is what I have TRIED).

I want A1 in Workbook Cat to be B1 in Workbook Dog:

#1 In Workbook Dog, B1, I type "=" then I click A1 in Workbook Cat; no results; it doesn't complete the formula in Workbook Dog.

#2 In Workbook Cat, C1(or any blank cell) I type "=A1", then copy/cut that cell, just paste it in B1 of Workbook Dog; it pastes the VALUE. I try to use Paste Special-Formula; option is grayed out.

Does that help?? I get the same results whether I use Copy or Cut.

Under Tools, Options, Calculation, is manual selected? That will likely cause this.

Also, under transition tab, make sure all check boxes are clear.

Hi, does anything happen when you type this as a formula into workbook Cat? Have workbook Cat open when this is tried.

you mean to say that when you select A1 in workbook cat, nothing at all happens in B1 in workbook dog?

All you see in B1 is = and nothing else?

I type : ='[c:\Razor IP Tracking TEST]Data'!$A$1 into a blank workbook and press enter and it returns a #REF!. I check the formula and it has changed to ='[c:\[Razor IP Tracking TEST]Data]Razor IP Tracking TEST]Data'!$A$1

Once your formula has changed to '[c:\[Razor IP Tracking TEST]Data]Razor IP Tracking TEST]Data'!$A$1
, what happens if you then edit that formula by deleting the [Razor IP Tracking TEST]Data] bit at the start, and leaving the link text as Excel has put it in?
