dell latitude 610, BIOS A16 (up to date) running XP.

When you try to put the machine into sleep it tells you:

System Standby Failed
The device driver for the "PCTEL 2304WT v.92 MDC Modem" device is preventing the machine from entering standby. Please close all applications and try again. If the problem persists you may need to update this driver

All applications were already closed. I then updated the modem drivers and reservicepacked the machine. Same error.

I then uninstalled the modem in device mangler and then got this new error:

System Standby Failed
The device driver for the "Communications Port (COM1)" device is preventing the machine from entering standby. Please close all applications and try again. If the problem persists you may need to update this driver

Great, so it is a COM problem. I verified she had no pda's or external devices using the COM ports and then reassigned COM1 to COM4 and rebooted, same error. I updated the COM drivers, same error

I played with the power options and set everything to never. I enabled hibernation. I set the system properties to prompt the user for action when the stand by button is hit. All of these are very unlikely, but I am stabbing in the dark now.

modem queries fine. Went to msconfig>startup> and unchecked pctspk, same error

HELP!

You might like to search Help and Support (while online) there are several reasons for this mainly to do with other programs preventing Hibernation.

Type "cannot enter hibernation" in the Search Box and see if you recognise any of them. Among them was mention of ICS, Adaptec software and others.

You might try the new PCTEL modem upgrade available through Windows Update late last week. My daughters Dell latitide was prompted for the upgrade yesterday.
