Some codecs may be corrupted...
try VLC to see if that works for you...

Have you tried cleaning out your Temporary Internet Files etc?
Running Disk Cleanup to remove some other temp files might help.
As this is only a recent occurrence perhaps using System Restore to go back a few days might restore functionality?
Do you have the same problem if you create another user and, or, logon with another user?
