I cannot ping to router in Windows ME. Any suggestions?

Suggestions can come after you supply more (much more) information:
1) What are you trying to accomplish? Is there a bigger problem?
2) What kind of router?
3) What's the address you're trying to ping?
4) Any errors?

Also, try doing an ip release, then renew in msdos prompt.. that occasionally fixes problems.. If you can get on the web without the router, try resetting the router.. I would even suggest powering down everything (modem/router/pc) and power them up pretty much at the same time after a few seconds - weird, but even this can fix problems on occasion.

Sorry, here's some additional info:
I have a BEFW11 S4 wireless -b router, and it hasn't gotten then internet (using a cable DSL modem) since 6/16. I have tried the ping tests, resetting by powering down and then powering up in reverse order and hitting the reset button. I have an active case file with linksys, in fact i'm in live chat with them in another window - and they can't seem to help me. I've had the equipment since 10/2003. I'm trying to use a WUSB 11 to connect wirelessly - I don't have an ethernet port on the back of my PC (it's an IBM Net vista running WIN Me. This is the first chance I've had to get online since this happened, and I've spent a good bit on parts to try and fix this. The last linksys tech said that my TCP/IP stack may need to be reset, but I can't find any info on how to do that for WIN ME. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

UPDATE: Finally got back online after being down for11 days. After buying network adapters cables, and reading this site, I'm blue in the face!
Problem appeared to be an inability to use a linksys USB11 wireless adabpter with my BEFW11S4 router. Linksys did advise for me to try the USB100M with an ethernet cable (I don't have an ethernet port on the back of my PC, which is why I was doing the wireless bit in the first place.) It seems to be working fine, and I thank all of the people here that post such helpful information! I hope that you can help me tie up a few loose ends. I know that the answers are here so if you'd kindly provide links to the information, I'd appreciate it.
1. How can I run a successful defrag in WIN ME? A common question I'm sure, but I've had success with everything I've found here. I also will print the link from Trev's tips. it looks helpful also.
2. Since I was using a wireless adapter, I'm used to seeing something in the system tray that shows status at all times, but nothings there. Is that normal?
3. Only have 2 USB ports on my PC and they are being used for the cable modem and the connection for the ethernet cable. Also have a 4 port usb hub for my printer and a zip drive, but nowhere to plug them now, since modem and ethernet cable need a dedicated port. But now I can't print or access my larger files via my Zip drive. I can get a parallel cable for the printer I guess, but what about the Zip drive?
4. When I go to the linksys webbased utility, I cannot see the 2 PC's in the DHCP Client Table. I had seen them when I wasn't able to connect. Should I be concerned?
5. Anyone ever use PC Pitstop.com?

Thanks for your responses, jr barnett. I guess the wireless thing just wasn't meant to be. As for item 3, I've been advised by my cable company and linksys that the modem and the USB100 must be plugged directly into the back of my PC and won't function if run thru a usb hub. I did try to run the cable modem thru the hub, it couldn't find a signal.

If you have an open slot you can buy an usb adapter.
That would get you additional usb ports.
To defrag your drive just make sure you have nothing running on you computer. No screensaver, no firewall, no nothing, but the defrag, or else it will stop.

I caught something in one of the earlier posts that I wanted to double check. Could you run through for me your wiring path for your cable modem, previously? What are the settings that you have tried in your router? I have used the WUSB-11 with a BEFW11S4 (it's two setups ago, but it worked) with very few problems, except for network saturation to a level that the Linksys could not handle, so I think that may have been a cop-out on Linksys's part.
Since nobody else has answered, I'll volunteer a little info...
My cable is inbound from the pole and connected directly to my cable modem (Motorola Surfboard SB4200). This model has both USB and RJ-45 ports.
I originally ran the connection directly to my computer via USB, just to test the connection and tweak the cable modem settings in an isolated environment.
I then disconnected the USB and connected the cable modem to a Linksys BEFSR11 via RJ-45 (WAN port). I connected the LAN port of the router to the uplink port on an HP Procurve 10/100 switch, then connected all of my machines to the same switch. It looks like this...
Utility pole - Cable Modem - BEFSR11(WAN) - BEFSR11(LAN) - HP Switch - PC1, PC2, etc...
I'm a little confused about your configuration...
Did I read that your two USB ports are taken up by the cable modem AND the ethernet connection? If that is the case, I understand the cable modem USBd to the PC, but it sounds like you then have the PC connected to a router or switch, which is also connected to all of the other computers on your network. Is this accurate? If so, it is usually the other way around with the router/switch the only thing directly connected to the cable modem. Since the router acts as an internet relay with a built-in firewall, you don't need a PC running ICS or firewall software.
