Hi folks :),

I know this probably is not the forum for that question but I posted this in the Communications Rack and didn't get any answer yet (I'm under a "little" pressure :~/ ) and knowing you guys here are pretty good [2thumbsup] I decided to increase my chances of a fast and accurate answer.

I work in a warehouse with a NT Server (latest service pack) and a Network with 16 Win 98 workstations. We are connected to the main office's firewall through a fiber-optic link and from there to the world (Internet).

Everything is working fine (and has been) but one workstation; with a little peculiarity it’s my BOSS [dragon]workstation ( ooops!).

This #%$@# computer was connecting perfectly to the Internet until last Friday (a day that my boss was off) but not anymore. I can connect to the network (tried with different users without problem) and I can Ping to the server and other workstations but it won't Ping to the firewall [pc].

From other workstations I can ping the Firewall without problems. Just that @#%#$%!@ machine can't. I tried reinstalling MS Internet Explorer but I don't have a CD just the Win 98 original one. And after many Internet upgrades it won't make any good.

Please I need some help before starting to put Her (my boss) computer apart [cannon].

Thanks in advance for your attention.

Luciano,

Summary:
Duff workstation (Boss) is Win98. Can ping everything on LAN except firewall.
Other workstations can ping firewall.

Can other workstations ping Boss? You don't list that.

Check IP addresses, net mask and default gateway of other workstations. All net masks should be the same. Default gateways should all be the same. Check Boss' PC. Her IP address should be on same subnet as other workstations, have same net mask and same default gateway.

If this is a ping problem, reloading IE won't save you. Its almost certainly an IP stack issue. If its not an addressing trouble, remove both TCPIP and Client for Microsoft Networks from Net Nei properties and restart. Then reinstall them (you'll need the CD though) and set them up properly as sometimes the networking goes strange with 98. This cures it.

You have to ask the following question:

What has changed? Did they make changes to the firewall? Did your boss add/remove any software last Friday? Is this computer on the same physical network and same subnet as the working systems? Have you verified the default gateway settings?

Can you do a tracert to the firewall? Where does the tracert fail?

Zelandakh & Jaeddy,

Thanks for your reply (I knew I could rely on the guys from this forum [bigglasses]).

I'll try to answer your questions but though I haven't said I've done all the tests you guys suggested.

-I can ping firewall from other stations (but Boss' one)
-I can ping to and from Boss' Station to and from other stations (Confusing?)
-Configuration is the same in stations (including Boss' one)
DNS - Disabled
Gateway - None
Wins - Use DHCP (my NT Server is also a DHCP Server)
IP Add - Obtain an IP... (From Server every boot - valid for 3 days)
Bindings - Client MS Network & File and Print Share

-Once the stations have no static addresses this eliminates the net and subnet addresses problems (or not? [ponder]).

It seems I'll have to accept Zelandakh suggestion and delete network protocols and adapter from Her [dragon] computer and reinstall everything.

Anyway appreciate your help. Any other is warmly welcomed.

Gateway = NONE?

To gain access to the outside world you're gonna need a default gateway (unless u have some fancy routing commands being executed in the login script).

Now is this related to a rogue IP address thats not behaving as it should? Why not find a working workstation, note it's EXACT IP details (run WINIPCFG.EXE). Sht this PC down and then manually set your bosses PC to the IP address that works OK... process of elimination....

Thanks again for the help.

Finally I (with you guys help) fixed it. :-D

I used Zelandakh advice and deleted Services, Adapters, Protocol and Clients and reinstalled everything (after a little "Where are the $@%#% drivers for the @%$#% NIC card?!" :-(). Presto!

Hope I can help you all and you need!

Luciano .

PS. F1lby, the information about the gateway is on the server. My guess is (once I do not have any kind of fancy routing comands) that because I do not have static addresses the Gateway information comes with the login (from the DHCP server). And is working without problems.

Actually was working the same way when we had a DSL Router connected to our Switch instead of the fiber-T1 the we have now.
