I have an issue with XP Pro SP2. Unsure what has changed (nothing major) but I cannot open the properties or sharing and security when I right click on a folder. I can right click on the properties of the C:\ root folder and get both but not any sub folders, even the currently shared folders. I can right click on the sub folders or the shared folders from another PC and see the properties and sharing tabs.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

Driving me nuts!

Thanks!

Sorry...further to this I can login in safe mode and open the properties and security and it sticks when I log back in normally but the properties will still not open on right click......

cant view folder properties
thread779-949189

I have seen it suggested that a combination of Firewall (especially Zone Alarm) and/or IIS can cause this problem. Have a wade through these links and see if you find anything.

Some general things to try.

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with Explorer.

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

Thanks Linney!

I didn't have a recent restore so that was my last option. I tried the chkdsk and sfc to no avail. I started sifting through your posts. I removed Client for Microsoft and File and Print Sharing. No luck. Finally I noticed one guy who removed IIS and it helped. Surely enough it as soon as started to remove the properties windows I had tried just before all started opening up!

Whatever the reason.......it is now fixed and it seems to have fixed an issue that I was having with VMWare as well (just installed...related?).

Thanks for your response Linney!
