Cannot open existing Access database 1

One database exists with 136 MB of content but cannot be opened from table window. Only shows NEW wizards, etc.

No problem with others.

Have searched FAQ with no luck.

When you get a moment, can you give a few more details? I'm thinking in terms of what version was the DB created, what version is being used to open it, stuff along those lines.

(the "around the bend" answer might involve importing the data to another application, say Excel, establishing a new DB and then re-importing the data to it. If your original db is corrupted, sometimes this works.)

Is it possible that the tables are hidden? If so, look at Tools->Options and check Hidden Objects. Another possibility is that some code is running on startup, holding the shift key while you open the database will often bypass any startup options. Please check Hidden Objects first and post back.

I have never, that I recall, found it necessary to import into Excel to repair a corrupt databse. Importing into a fresh database is nearly always sufficient.

I was only reporting what worked for me. Your experience may differ.

I hope you're not discouraging solutions you haven't personally experienced. Heck, I'd have to take back all those Stars I've given you!

No, I am not discouraging solutions I have not tried, but I cannot see a reason for using Excel. If the data can be copied into Excel, it can more safely be copied into a new database. Transferring from Excel to Access can be a problem, as I am sure you must have noticed from many posts. In addition, all relationships will be lost and unless the database is split, it will still be necessary to copy forms, reports queries etc to a new database.

Is the thread most often recommended for corrupt databases, however, from what has been said so far, I do not think that Robob2007 has a corrupt database, so I think it is advisable to check the simplest possibilities before moving to more drastic solutions.

PS If stars were the primary motivation of people who frequent these fora, I think there would be a different pattern of responses.

Thanks to all but nothing has worked.

The database was created with the Access program, a part of Office 2000, saved, reopened and added to several times. Software has not been changed.

Nothing has been exported to Excel or any other program.

Two databases suddenly became inaccessible. One returned on its own but one remains grayed out.

Performing a search with Windows XP Professional reveals all of the *.mdb files and indicates that the missing one contains 136KB of data.

I may simply have to recreate the database. Luckily it's not gigantic.
