are you sure that the programme can be installed on your operating system, was it say designed for win 95 only? Do you have enough harddrive space to install said programme? do you have the administrative rights to install?

The one on the CD is for XP (and others)- this is the one that sticks on the 1st Intallation screen. I click next and the message comes up that it is not responding/
The downloaded one is a zip file, but it goes to teh set up of a previous program.

Have you tried right-clicking on the zip file and selecting another program to open the Zip file using the "Open With" option? You can also set the zip file association to your program that opens zip files with that procedure by selecting "always use this program" in the "open with" dialog box.

Maybe your CD is dirty or damaged, can you copy the setup file to hard drive and then run the setup from the hard drive?

Have a look in your Event Viewer, there might be some errors in there to give you a clue or two.

Sorry, but the downloaded file is an exe file. When I open it it displays the name as it prepares for installation but then brings up another program's set up.

i have copied the CD set up to hard disk and it just sticks on the 1st installation screen. When I click next it come up with 'not responding'

Many thanks

Have you tried your luck with the help and support provided by the program's web site or creator?

What is the name of this program that you downloaded? And what is the name of the program it tries to open at setup?

The CD is Will Creator - I have e miled them with the problem
The download file is safety_cam_uk_TomTom.exe it comes up with this name but goes to DVDSanta set up wizard

What is the connection between "safety_cam_uk_TomTom.exe" and "Will Creator"? The only thing that comes to mind about getting a "DVDsanta" from an unrelated program setup is that someone has altered the original setup or similar.

You could try cleaning out your temp files, including temporary internet files and see if that makes any difference.

Have you tried your luck installing via Safe Mode, or using another administrative user profile to install from?

Many thanks,linney.

I used another user to load the CD program.

I also copied the downloaded from desktop to elsewhere and it loaded OK.

Both OK now.

But what does it mean as regards not being able to do so when I am logged in?

Are you an Administrative User or just a Limited User? You may not have sufficient privileges to install programs?

Sometimes over time, a user profile might get corrupted and need to be replaced. Or you may just have remnants of failed installs in your temp files or registry.

I Have loaded all programs under my user name previously with no problems.

I will see how things go for any future programs and will be able to load them thanks to your invaluable help

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with Explorer.

Try Safe Mode (Do you have this problem in Safe Mode?).

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Select both boxes.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.
