Hi! The infamous "cannot install this hardware" shows up when attempting to install a Linksys Wireless G Type II adapter (wpc54g ver 1.2) on a Dell Inspiron 2650 Laptop. Here's the info:
1)Freshly reformatted / reinstalled XP Home (due to other problems I was having), sp2, all critical updates performed. All systems OK. Unit runs like a champ. Celeron CPU on this unit (fyi).
2)Turned off xp firewall and avg av. Went to install the linksys to no avail. Software will install fine though. Used most up to date drivers from the site.
3)After research, found a hack available for the registry, deleting any "linksys" keys / strings under local machine / services. No go.
4)Was on the chat with linksys support. Directed me to linksys.com/connect which is a diag that does your machine. No problems found.
5)Took the same card and plugged it into a Dell Inspiron 5150 and it came up as a Dell Wireless, installed fine there (that was pro / sp1).
Couple of hours on this one....ready to try netgear. Any thoughts out there? Thanks in advance!!
