I have just installed a Primary Domains controller onto my workgroup , see's everything fine like all the other pc'son the workgroup and also another domain controller , most of machines are running win2000 and have no prob picking up the Network Printer which is a HP LAserjet 4 Plus with a network address of (exp) 192.168.123.200.

But when i try to install the printer for the new NT4 server, i cannot seems to find it on the network at all, i ve downloaded the HP laserjet utilities for installing this and so far it has not work, what i mean by that is , it installs the printer driver on the NT4 server , and everything seems fine , but when i try to print a test page i get nothing , i ve tried pinging the printer and all seems fine, i was hoping if any1 can shed some light on this little problem .

Thx in Advance

What port does your printer think it is connected to? You need to create a TCP/IP port on the NT Server first.

The Network printer has a network card installed and conected thru the network , I no expert in this field , but thats the setup in the office, been running on a peer2peer network and found the need to have a server running some invoicing program so that all the otehr win2000 machines can print invoices and somewhere central to keep the data,.

So far all the win2000 machines i ve managed to connect and print by assigning the specific IP address of 192.168.123.200 without any probs.

But on the NTserver whenever i vetried to configure the port on the printer i just just the message of "theres nothing to configure for this port"

Also i noticed that i have 2 entries for this printer , i cant delete either 1 of them , im kinda reluctant to reinstall as i think theproblem lies elsewhere , so any suggestions would be appreciated.

When you go to your NT server, go to set up a new printer, you are presented with a list of available ports. What is listed, like LPT1, LPT2 etc?

If you want to print over a TCP/IP network, you need to install a TCP/IP port, by clicking add port, then selecting standard TCP/IP port, or HP Jet Direct port, depending on what you have, then specifying an IP address.

Install IPX/SPX on your NT box and then try to connect to your JetDirect PrintServer. Once you make the connection and you change all the settings you need changed, take IPX/SPX off of the NT box and you should be alright with just TCP/IP.

Thx Andy , guess i must have missed a step somewhere b4, got it to work finally , even lets me now to delete those troublesome ports that wont go earlier ..

Anyway , Thx a mil andy and rtichor
