I get this error message when click Start, Shut Down, Reboot:

OleMainThreadWndName - Application cannot respond to the End Task request. blah blah blah.... standard error message. Wait, End Task, Cancel at the bottom of the window.

I have look everywhere and cannot find what this application is!

Does anyone have any clues as to what it might be?

I don't think this is specifically caused by any one application, it is an OS issue. The closest I have got to a solution is registry fix to end any hung tasks on logoff or shutdown.

Add (or amend value of) a REG_SZ value named AutoEndTasks to HKEY_USERS<SID>\Control Panel\Desktop. Set it to 1 to forcibly kill off unresponsive tasks. You may also want to add the same value to HKU\.DEFAULT so that new accounts inherit it; you can also add it to a policy template.

Usual warnings about editing the registy apply! Let me know if it works.

Postscript to the above answer:
Whilst this seems to work for most hung tasks it does not for OleMainThreadWndName.

Sorry. I'm still in the same boat as you.

Ok - Thanks.

I don't know what to do about it except put in a Lights Out card (server is a Compaq Dl320). When you use the reboot command while connected to the server using Lights Out it kills all apps and restarts.

All of my servers have lights out, but I have no idea how to use it, we don't even have the software. Could you please give me a little push in the right direction for getting the software and what lights out does.

Lights Out???

As long as it is installed and you server recognizes it all you have to do is:

Reboot the server.

You will get a prompt that says if you want to configure your Lights Out card hit F8.

Hit F8 - it will bring you to a menu allowing you to:

Config IP settings (static is best), usernames, passwords , and access levels.

Once complete the server will restart. To check and see if it works all you have to do is point your web browser to the Lights-out Ip address and you will be prompted to login.

If you have any of the manuals they are a great help.
