cannot find a DNS server

One of my users turned on his machine this morning and could not browse the net. I went to see and I was not able to ping anyone except myself. I tried to connect it to another domain and it says that no DNS server is configured for this system error # 0x0000267c.
Also, while it was on, I went to the server and I was not able to see it in server manager.
This PC is running xp pro and my server is nt4
any suggestions?

It could be the name resolution issue or firewall issue.

Did this just start happening all of the sudden? Or is this a new system on the network?

It doesn't sound like it's on the same network as the rest of the computers.

What is the IP address of the computer? Does it show a 169.x.x.x address? Is the computer being assigned an address through a DHCP server? I'd check the address of the computer first...

It could be a bad drop I suppose or patch cable I suppose...

this pc is on the same network and it just started all of a sudden. It has been on the network for a while.
The ip is 196.254.76.29
I tried it in two different locations (i physically brought it to my office)
help.

What happens when you ping it from itself? What does ipconfig /all show? Good luck.

When I connect to work via a Cisco VPN Dailer/Blackice combination I'm not longer able to ping my pc at work. This was working fine. When I do a ipconfig /all it shows the dns servers have changed to 157.199* ips which look similiar to ips at work. But I can't ping anything that starts with 157.199.*.

Any suggestions.
