Got a strange error popping up in my Access DB. I've had three different users experience it today.

They get an error message saying "You cannot exit the program at this time. If you are running a Visual Basic program etc etc etc" The messagebox has an "OK" button, but all clicking that does is cause the error message to pop up again. Also, the bottom lefthand screen border has "Compacting" and a progress bar that's stuck at about 70%.

Did I somehow accidently code something that's causing a the database to try and repair itself? I'm trying to replicate the error, but any suggestions would be most appreciated.

I try not to let my ignorance prevent me from offering a strong opinion.

Seems you have the automatic compact on close ticked in the General tab of the Options sheet.

Hope This Helps, PH.

I'd have to agree with PHV...
assuming you have not added any 3rd party controls.

Sounds like the db may have become corrupted, and it's trying to repair itself.

Backup the DB...

Delete the .ldb file, try using your db again.

-----------

If 3rd party controls are in use, start disabling them, and see if the error occurs again.

Good Luck

No third party controls. Checked a few of the front ends, nobody has auto compact selected. Will Access automatically try to repair itself? I thought that sort of thing had to be kicked off by the user.

As for repairing itself, I beleive the newer versions of access will try to repair itself. Similiar to if Word or Excel crashes, it tries to repair the file, then re-opens it.

You may want to verify this at microsoft's msdn site.

Otherwise, try to debug where the error is occuring, then trouble-shoot from there.

Good Luck

I've also had MS Access 2000 databases try to repair and compact without user interaction (upon close). Finally I had to create a new db and import all objects - my problem was corrected, but this is obviously a last resort.
