I have just upgraded to a new box with ASUS A7N8X Deluxe/XP pro – I was expecting plain sailing installing all the bits and bobs from my old PC (everyone raves on about how good XP drivers are etc). I firstly needed to replace the graphics card as the 3 year old one wasn’t AGP compatible. It is now up and running and fine.
I have attempted to install the old Motorola SM56 (pci) modem card (which was working fine in the old box). I down loaded the XP drivers from the Motorola site (although they headed the download with a disclaimer).
I put the card in slot 3 (the manual said it was shared – like slot 1 and 5). When I set it up the modem diagnostics said it setup fine but it couldn’t be started – Code 10.
The normal suggestion is to try a different slot. Unlike before the PC’c found the new hardware when I put it in slot one I installed the driver it all looked fine. I then tried to dial up the number for my ISP, it said the modem wasn’t detected – could be in use??
I went to the control panel – it said it was attached to COM port 3 with IRQ 16 (I am led to believe this is correct) – no conflicts and that the device was working correctly. I ran the diagnostics most things were set up fine, however a couple of options were flagged as unsupported (AT+GMM, AT#CLS=?).
I saw it mentioned somewhere that older divers weren’t compatible with the new mobos because they don’t have the sharing capabilities the PCI slots require, does any one know if this is true.
If anyone can shed some light on this – it seems to be 90% there.
