cannot delete messages!

Suddenly for no reason at all, I cannot delete any of the messages I receive in outlook express. When I open the message and click on delete, I just get an alert box saying message cannot be deleted.

Dragging the message into the deleted items folder does not work either - the messages just do not move into that folder.

How can I fix this?
