Cannot delete file - file in use 4

Hi All,

I have a .avi file on my pc which I am unable to delete as it says that the file is already in use or being used by another program.

Obviously I have closed all apps and I have even tried disconnecting my internet connection, but I still cannot delete it.

Could anyone shed some light on how to get rid of this little fella please...

Thanks Kippy13,

I right clicked on the file which was giving me problems and checked with TDS-3. It sat doing a scan for about 10 mins without informing of any progress. So on the off-chance I tried deleting the troublesome file and it deleted.

thanks for helping resolve this problem. The only shame is that I don't know what was causing it.

Hi,
This file is usually installed by some malware. There are a couple of discussions in these forums about it, just do a keyword search if u want to find out more.

Avi files are a type of video file. The problem is that Explorer tries to read the entire file to obtain the property sheet information, and to build a preview thumbnail. This is a lengthy enough process by itself, but if there is any corruption in the file it can seemingly lock your machine.

. Many users of AVI files use this "tweak":

Start, Run, Regedit
Then open the following path and rightclick the "InProcServer32" value and delete. Close your registry, boot your computer and you're done. That's all it needs

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}\InProcServer32

This key is the AVI Property Handler, and it tells XP not to try and build a preview.

. Along with the Dellater utility mentioned above, the following will also work:

(i). Remove all the other files from the folder to somewhere else, and delete the Folder;

(ii). Create a notepad file of any length in the folder. Select the .txt file, use the Ctrl key to then click the AVI file. Right-click and delete both.

(iii). Bring up Task Manager. End the process Explorer.exe. Use the File, New Task function and a dos command del /s /q full path and filename.ext. File, New Task, explorer.exe to restore your desktop

(iv) "Distract" explorer.
I just open any program, eg. Notepad:
1. File/Open
2. Files of type/all files
3. Browse to file
4. Right-click/delete
