I just installed a new w2k3 server, and I try to connect it to an NT 4.0 domain. But no result, it just doesn't want to connect. I get "The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted "

now I got my netbios over tcp enable, wins configured, LMHOST file present... what else do I miss??? I can see the network by connecting shared drive from other server.

any tips??

hummm... active directory is not installed on that machine... in fact, we don't use AD.

How can I checked that it is not installed?

regards,

Nick

As I understand your problem, you have a standalone Win2K3 server that you want to have join your NT4 Domain. Is that correct? As a standalone server it would not have AD running on it.

Please check the Win2K3 Server's event logs and report back if you are getting any errors when trying to join the domain.

Hi guys,

You are correct. w2k3 standalone. I try to make it member of an NT 4 domain. AD is not installed.

I just tried again to make it a member with no results.
I verify the log and there is nothing there to help me figure this one out. Applications, security and system shows nothing.

My guess is you don't have DNS set up in your NT 4 domain and the win 2003 server is jonesing for a dns record that points it to a domain controller that it will then contact to try to join the domain. I suspect the evil mothership microsoft wants everyone to ditch NT4 for the newer and more expensive win 2003/XP and has made win 2003 / xp to not play nice with nt4.

Have you tried adding it to the the NT server manager first? Can you ping the PDC?
