Hi,

I have recently had a few database problems so I assumed I would not be able to browse the filing system when I tried to recover some data. It displayed all the relevant drives but I could not go any further. Is this normal??? As I have re-installed and I am getting the same problems.

Surely not as all I want to do is recover 1 file not a whole drive?

Any advice appreciated.

Cheers.

Are you browsing the source or destination tab?

If you are browsing through the "Restore by tree" in the source tab, and nothing is there, then the database doesn't have the directory and file information. You can try merging the tape in to see if that helps. Make sure to disable purge if the tape is very old. Otherwise, it will purge the records from the tape you just merged. Of course this only works if you recorded file information in the job (this is the default).

If you are browsing the destination tab and you aren't able to dig into the directory structure then the problem is not related to the database. It could be communication problem (client agent) or configuration of the shares (restore through the network).

Sorry I am not that experienced with Arcserve but how do I merge the tape in?

I have managed to find the merge utility and in the process have came across some information.

I have read that you may need to merge media if the job was created for another server, is this correct? I am backing up a machine that is not the host so is this why I am not recording session info etc..... or have I got the wrong end of the stick...?

There are basically two cases where you would need to merge a tape:

1. When the tape information was purged.
2. When you are trying to restore the tape using a different backup server.

The ARCserve server has a database that contains all of the information about the tapes and files on each tape. If the database does not have these records you can't see them in the restore manager. Merging the tape is the way you get the file information off the tape and into the database.

If the backup ran from a different server.
If the backup ran from this server but backed up another system then it would be in the database, unless it was pruned, deleted, never made it into the database in the first place, or a tapecopy was made and the copy was deleted.
