That's about it. Taskbar won't go down.
Not locked.
IF keep on top of other windows is not selected, it stays up behind all open windows.
IF Keep on top of other windows is selected it stays on top of them.
You wouldn't think it, but it's a major annoyance.

Thanks for any input.

(Note: I can't repair XP64, which I am currently running. I would have to reinstall vista instead, something I have been dreading.)

I don't know if it will work on Vista, but it works on my XP Pro SP2 & wife's 98SE. Give it a shot, it's free and you can download it from:

Once you install it, go to Settings & take off "Delayed Activation of the Taskbar". Hopefully that will solve your problem.

I will try the app if I can't find a registry tweak or a fix.
I would try to repair XP, but I can't, since I traded up to Vista, which I really don't want to get involved in right now (or next year or....), but know I need to reinstall at some point, which will make the problem go away (while bringing untold new ones). Aside from the driver issues (64 bit) this is the only problem I have had.

I can't figure out what stopped it from functioning. Thanks.

I just found the link to this. I couldn't find the original post, so I put up a separate solution. The short version of the autohide failure is that explorer.exe is hung up waiting for an action. The solution therefor is not a separate app (there are sure a lot of those floating around out there -- indicates something) but to use task manager to close out explorer.exe (ignoring ubiquitous warning) in processes, then switch to explorer.exe in the applications tab.

Since Windows will mess this up anything it thinks it has to get a response from you, the fix is only good until the next time it hangs. Fortunately it's a quickie.

Thanks for the help.
