Cannot associate .rtf file type to WordPad

One way would be to completely remove the association entirely. This will then mean that when you try to open a rtf document it will ask you which file you want to associate with it. Browse to Wordpad and ensure the 'Always connect' box is ticked.
If you find once you have removed this that it still tries to open it in Word then you know that there is ANOTHER association that has to be removed.
