cannot access secure websites or windows update

I am going to look at a friends computer 2morrow (hence the fact that the details are a but vague). Apparently when he tries to access any websites where they ask for passwords (secure server stuff i guess), he just gets this page is not available.

He is running windows XP (home I would guess but maybe pro). He has tried to install a newer IE from microsoft site but this is also not available. Windows update produces an error (not sure what this is tho).

I can only hope he has an over configured firewall of some kind or something similar. Does anyone have any ideas as to what I should check? I will take XP service packs on CD and install them - any other suggestions?

If you can get Windows Update service to work the rest will be solved by the Hotfixes and Updates it wants to apply.

Start with this Troubleshooter:

Eventually we want to get to Windows Update and have the Cumulate Update to IE installed, which should include the following issues:

Lets jump ahead of the process and do a direct download of the last Hotfix:

Apply this Hotfix.

Now try Windows Update again.

Spend a little time now at Windows Update.

One last quick note, often the steps below are enough to get Windows Update working again, but certainly try them as one of your first measures to fix the issue:
