Not sure if this is an XP problem...
Running XP pro, all updates current. I open IE, and I get the DNS server error.
I can get my email thru Outlook, I can connect and play online games and I can get updates like Norton, etc. But I cant connect to internet with IE. I havent added or removed anything, I ran spybot and Norton, all ok. I can also ping any address I want from command line.
Also, I have another pc and a laptop all using same Linksys BEFSR41 router, they can get to internet, just the third pc cant. Also tried rebotting and unplugging all connections to cable modem, no good.
It 'just started' yesterday afternoon.
Im baffled.
Thanx in advance.

clear all temporary internet files, clear all cookies (a currupt cookie can casue this problem). if this does not help, let me know.

Somtimes, the easy answer is the hardest to find. :)

Try setting EVERYTHING in Internet Options back to default.

If that doesn't work then you might want to try reinstall IE (<don't have a clue on how to do that) because it seems to be an IE specific problem on that machine.

Before reinstalling IE you can try clearing the DNS cache.

Try this at the command prompt (start>run>cmd)

ipconfig /flushdns

Then try IE again.

Good luck

IE also has a repair feature built in, if you got the add/remove window in the control panel it will give you a repair option ... Good luck

Well, deleted cookies and all temp internet files, did ipconfig /flushdns, set everything back to defaults. Same old problem.
As for removing IE, that can be done easily enough, then I can reinstall.
Also, the repair feature, I thought that wasnt an option in XP, I dont see it. It was there in 98 and ME....
Gonna remove and reinstall IE. Will let you know what happens.

Yeehaw!!! Syar saved the day. But thanx to all for the help. :)
p.s. - Sy gets a star....

THX for that , pleased to hear you got the issue solved

Bye for now.

So many things can cause this problem in windows it is not even funny :) Glad you got it fixed. I dug out my old tech support docs from when I did cable modem tech support, winsocks was last on the list ... sometimes i wonder if it should be first :)

There is so many automatic tweks and stuff people do now for broadband and there is also spy/malware/trojan and with spyware removal tools things can get wasted in registry .
So i would agree with you Rebecca to try repair the socks first.
And also use a hijackthis log to see whats running and what's starting on theese today vonurable pc/windows systems.

Well then my next project is to dig up what caused it. Im always tinkering and messin around, I just need to start tracking what I do.
Thanx again for all the help.

Install a
firewall.(kerio perhaps)
Spybot search and Destroy (use immunize)
Adaware
Grisoft AVG 6.0

All theese are free for personal use
