If I have 2 computers at home, connected by ethernet, can I share the modem so that either computer can use it (if both computers are on)? And if so, can both computers be online at the same time?

Well you cant physically share the hardware, but you can share the internet in numerous ways, With Win98 SE you can use ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) , or you can download a 3rd party Proxy server from tucows.com, or you can try what I used, which proved to be the best, Wingate (you may find this on tucows)

Share modem with mshare from artisoft. If both are to be to the net you can use ishare from artisoft which does the same thing as wingate.
And if you want to physically share it then cable it thru a switch box.
