Not sure if this is the right forum for this but I`ve been asked to ping a certain pc.

What is the point of this and what is it? Also, how do I do it? :oD

I didn`t want to sound stupid and ask what it was as it looked like I am supposed to know. Any help is much apreciated......

Pinging is simply asking another computer if it is there.

Go to your command prompt and type:

c:\ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the IP address you want to ping. It will send the compter a few packets and measure the speed in which the other computer responded to the ping. ----------------------------------------

Also, in case you get asked. Another commonly used command is tracert (Trace Route) it is used in the same way a ping is but it returns the information about which and how many backbones a computer has to jump to get back to you, as well as how long it spends on each trunk. This is more commonly used for testing website response but it also works well with WAN's. Keep in mind that if you are testing IP's with a domain attached, you can use the domain name in place of the IP (
