Hello,

Can someone tell me if this zone file looks ok? Especially the the MX stuff. I have also included the reverse file. The domain and ip addresses have been changed to non-descript ones protect the innocent.

Code:
Name	Type	Data
(same as parent folder)	Start of Authority	[43], ns1.domain.com., hostmaster.domain.com.
(same as parent folder)	Name Server	ns2.domain.com.
(same as parent folder)	Name Server	ns1.domain.com.
acsserver	Host	10.10.10.50
mail	Host	10.10.10.50
mail	Mail Exchanger	[10] mail.domain.com.
ns1	Host	10.10.10.50
ns2	Host	192.168.0.96
[URL unfurl="true"]www	Host[/URL]	10.10.10.50

And the reverse zone:
Code:
Name	Type	Data
(same as parent folder)	Start of Authority	[18], ns1.domain.com., hostmaster.ipbroadcastmarketing.com.
(same as parent folder)	Name Server	ns1.domain.com.
(same as parent folder)	Name Server	ns2.domain.com.
10.10.10.50	Pointer	[URL unfurl="true"]www.domain.com.[/URL]
10.10.10.50	Pointer	mail.domain.com.
10.10.10.50	Pointer	acsserver.domain.com.

I had some mail problems when I switch to these name servers so I switched back to my registrar's dns service and have waited a few weeks to let everything settle down. I just want to make sure I don't have any glaring issues.

Thanks a million.
Steve

You're going to have a problem with the pointer records, as they will be parsed from top to bottom. As soon as the IP is encountered (in this case, 10.10.10.50), the corresponding name is returned (in this case, This may cause problems with some mail servers that you exchange mail with. You may want to put your mail server first in the list, then the others.

Great suggestion. That would explain the issues we have had. I feel silly for not noticing that.

Thanks a million.

Oops, one other question. Do I need a catch-all record? I notice on some web sites you have to include the www. or it won't find the web site. On most these days you can just refer to it by domain.com. All of this domains services reside on the same IP.

Sincerely,
Steve

Would the record just look like:

domain.com Host 10.10.10.50

or is there a special character I should use?

such as:
* Host 10.10.10.50

This is a DNS Server on Windows 2000 Server.

Thanks again for the help.

Cheers,
Steve

Just create a new host, with nothing in hostname field and it will create a new host with the name (same as parent folder).
