I have a EMC clarion DAE-2 disk array. I would like to know if you have to have the head to control it or can you connect directly to a host?

You should probably ask that question in the the EMC forum.
It's a dumb shelf with an FC-AL interconnect (a loop), 2 power supplies, and 15 drive bays. If you had an FC-AL HBA, you probably could manage to connect it directly to a host. If you did manage that, and the DAE was fully populated, you would see 15 disks. It's a dumb enclosure; no RAID, no nothing.

Thank you for that information. I tried connecting to the Host directly with the fc-al cable and I wasn't able to see the populated drives.
I think it's going to depend on the HBA and HBA settings.
FYI: most later version Clariion controllers are a modified version of window XP embedded.... running enterprise apps on XP... nuf said.
