howdy all,
I've seen a few posts with a similar issue, with no good solutions yet, so I thought I'd lay out in detail what I'm up against.
The current box is a Win 2000 Pro laptop trying to connect through a MS Proxy Server 2.0 box. I've had the same problem on a Win 2000 Pro box using dialup, and a Win ME box using dialup.
You are apparently connected to the Internet. If I try to Ping a name, like MSN.COM, (you can't Ping through Proxy Server 2) it obviously times out, but the first line says "Pinging MSN.COM [207.68.173.254] with 32 bytes...", so I am getting name resolution! If I try to open the website, IE opens and the status line reports "Connecting to site 207.68.173.254" until it times out and goes to "Page cannot be displayed". This is with the IE settings on "Automatically detect proxy settings", because if I put in manual proxy info then the web browser fails immediately.
Win 2000 Pro is SP2 in this case, and I've installed Service Pack 1 on the Proxy Server 2.0 machine (running NT 4.0).
