Is there anyway to let a non sys admin see the status of a job running that they are not owners of without adding them to the sysadmin role? Everything I keep reading says they have to be in the sysadmin role in order to see the job status.

Correct, to see all the jobs you have to be a sysadmin.

One option that I've recommended in the past is to create a web page that queries the jobs tables in msdb and shows the data on a web page. It won't be interactive, but you can at least see the data.

I second the motion on the web page. but ill add that i created it in asp.net so mine actually is interactive. its been quite useful. we have a seperate security system thats very granular for the intranet so it allows us to give individual access to each server.
