I have a maintenance plan that rebuilds the indexes of a database, this plan runs once a week. It sometimes can take up to 45 hours to complete! I do have processes that are running and reading data from the database during the rebuilding - can this cause a problem?

How big are the databases? Do all indexes need to be rebuilt? You should only reindex if the indexes are fragmented and the fragmentation impacts performance. Check some of these articles. They may provide help in reducing the time required to reindex.

Of course this may mean dumping the maintenance plan and developing your own. This is often a good idea. Terry L. Broadbent - DBA
