i recently uninstalled old versions(2001,2003,etc) of Norton Anti Virus from win98 & winme pc's. now, these clients can no longer log onto our win nt 4.0 sp6 server. they get "no domain controller available to validate password" msg. clients can ping server ip address, but not server name. we have 4 addtron wireless hubs with a number of different wireless cards(belkin, addtron, d-link) and no encryption. they can access internet thru the wireless system(we have a t1 connected to a router), but not the nt network printers. i installed trend micro pc-cillin on these pc's and have tm enterprise firewall on the nt server. i believe the problem began with the uninstall of nav because at the end of uninstall a screen lists several files which were left behind. i did a screen shot, pasted into wordpad, but was unable to print to the network printer(s). should have stopped after the 1st pc had problems, but we have been getting many virus emails, no one had kept up the software virus checker or ms updates & i have repeated this on 4 pc's. i have no network experience, limited pc exp, and was hired to write reports 2 months ago. hope this is enough info for someone to give me a hand. thx, ron

If you can ping by IP, you at least have network connectivity. The reason you can't ping by name is that your clients can not find a WINS or DNS server.

On a client, do IPCONFIG /ALL from a command prompt. Look at the WINS and DNS settings. Record the DNS and WINS settings. (If there are no WINS or DNS settings, you must enter WINS/DNS settings) Try to PING the IP address of the WINS server. Try to Ping the IP address of the DNS server. Did they respond? If they did, that means the server that hosts DNS and WINS is available. However, the service for DNS/WINS may not be functioning. Check the server for DNS/WINS problems.

Also, the DNS server and WINS server must be on your internal network.

Jpoandl thx for your help.i can ping servers(WINS & DNS) from client's pc. when i open DNS Mgr on the nt server, all i see is "Server List". shouldn't this list the pc's eligible to use this server? thx, ron

Yes, you should see the clients too.

JPoandl, a belated thx for your help. 2 days after your 2nd reply, the nt stopped loading. our outside consultant recommended replacing nt w/ win2000 server. we finally got the server back 8/20. i wish i had been told how the nt was set up. i think i probably caused it to die. i kept applying ms critical updates, including for internet explorer & outlook. probably these caused nt to fail. apparently, at some point after support has ceased for a particular version of win it is dangerous to apply any more updates. an unhappy lesson learned the hard way. again, thx for your help. ron

Hi Joseph:

When I checked ipconfig/all , it has wins and dns and they ping . however I can';t locate my server over the internet or use outlook over VPN.
