Hi i am setting up a cisco 801 router to access the internet, i can ping an external ip address, and can access a website by typing in the ip address of the site into my browser. My problem is that if i try and access the site using its domain name ( or any webite the domain name does not appear to get resolved. I assume i am not using a DNS when i should be, but i dont know how to set up the router to use a DNS. Could somebody please help...

Regards
Deleco :)

Make sure your router has the 'no ip-classless' command in it. If you use ip-classess, alot of websites will come up reachable only by IP address.

You'll need to point to a DNS server. How to below: (Ask your ISP for the ip(s) of their dns server (...u can add more than one for redundancy)

DOG_POUND#conf t
Enter configuration commands, one per line. End with CNTL/Z.
DOG_POUND(config)#ip domain-lookup
DOG_POUND(config)#ip name-server 198.6.1.5
DOG_POUND(config)#end
DOG_POUND#copy run star

You will need to put DNS server information into your TCP/IP properties on your PC. A router is not a DNS cache engine, nor is it a proxy server!!
