Can I use Outlook for internal e-mail?

I would like to set Outlook 2k to handle internal e-mail for our office. How can I do this on our network without a domain?

I assume you dont allready have a mailserver installed...

You can do this in a variety of ways...

Firstly, the cheap way

Create a Microsoft PostOffice in Windows 95 Control Panel (Not sure how its done in others) and setup an outlook profile with MS Mail added as service. Add users to the postoffice as normal. This is not designed to allow for future expansion to external e-mail.

Now, the expensive way

Use MS Exchange Server on a separate machine (No Domain Required) which can support external e-mail should you decide to upgrade.

I don't know how sensible this is, but it has worked as a last resort with a client.

Set up a Workgroup postoffice on a Win9x machine, and copy the WGPO subdirectory whole to the Win2k machine. You will have to do the admin from a Win9x machine, but the mail clients can communicate directly with the Win2k machine. You will also have to make sure that Microsoft mail is set up in Outlook, as it won't work with the internet mail services.

You are right, there is no support for Postoffice (Its possibly hidden in the back orifces of a CAB file) in Windows 98. The above idea works perfectly.

Just to let you know when you set up the directory (As the above person said, well done for that) You must share it and you should map it to a drive so when you admin it you simply type E:\ etc)

An option for a full email server that is cheaper and simpler than MS Exchange is VPOP3. Check it out at

We have used this program with great success and I can recommend it for a small-medium sized organisation.
